A quick and easy savory steak bowl featuring marinated flank steak, garlicky green beans, and fluffy jasmine or basmati rice. Perfect for a cozy New Year’s Eve dinner or any special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, trimmed and thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari/coconut aminos for gluten-free)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp honey or brown sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • 12 oz (340g) fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (or olive oil for dairy-free)
  • 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 cups cooked jasmine or basmati rice (about 1 cup dry)
  • Optional garnishes: chopped scallions, toasted sesame seeds, fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Steak: In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, olive oil, honey, minced garlic, black pepper, and smoked paprika. Add the thinly sliced flank steak, toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes (up to 2 hours).
  2. Cook the Rice: While the steak marinates, cook jasmine or basmati rice according to package instructions, yielding about 2 cups cooked. Fluff with a fork and keep covered to stay warm.
  3. Prepare the Garlic Green Beans: Rinse and trim the green beans. Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant but not browned. Add green beans, season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 6–8 minutes until tender-crisp and bright green. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Cook the Steak: Heat a clean skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat. Remove steak from marinade, letting excess drip off. Sear the steak slices in a single layer for 2 minutes per side, or until nicely browned but still juicy inside. Avoid overcrowding; cook in batches if necessary. Remove steak and let rest for 5 minutes.
  5. Assemble the Bowl: Spoon warm rice into bowls. Top with garlic green beans and seared steak slices. Garnish with chopped scallions, toasted sesame seeds, or a squeeze of lemon juice if desired.
  6. Serve Immediately: Enjoy the dish fresh off the stove when the steak is tender and the green beans are crisp.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the pan when searing steak to ensure a good crust. Rest steak after cooking to keep it juicy. Use tamari or coconut aminos for gluten-free version. Cauliflower rice can be used as a low-carb alternative. Garlic should be added last minute to green beans to avoid bitterness.
