Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups (440g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk
  • ¼ cup (60ml) melted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 stick (½ cup/115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • ¼ tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Make the dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Add the melted butter, egg, and activated yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes (or 5 minutes if using a stand mixer) until it’s smooth and elastic. If the dough feels sticky, sprinkle with a little extra flour.
  4. Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Prepare the garlic butter: Mix softened butter with minced garlic, parsley, Italian seasoning, and salt in a small bowl. Set aside.
  6. Shape the bread: Roll out the dough into a rectangular shape (about ½-inch thick). Spread the garlic butter evenly over the surface.
  7. Slice and stack: Cut the dough into strips, then stack the strips on top of each other. Cut the stack into squares and arrange them upright in your greased baking pan.
  8. Second rise: Cover the pan and let the dough rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Cool slightly: Let the bread cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Make sure your butter and egg are at room temperature for easier mixing. Don’t skip the second rise for fluffiness. Monitor baking time to avoid over-browning.
