A refreshing summer mojito featuring fresh strawberries, basil, and zesty lime, perfect for backyard barbecues or cooling down on hot days. This easy recipe can be made with or without alcohol and is a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 810 fresh basil leaves, gently torn
  • Juice of 2 medium limes (about 2 ounces)
  • 2 ounces white rum (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar (or honey/agave syrup as substitute)
  • 1 cup sparkling water (8 fl oz)
  • Ice cubes (enough to fill glass)
  • Mint leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse strawberries and basil leaves under cold water. Hull and slice strawberries; gently tear basil leaves to release aroma without bruising too much.
  2. Place sliced strawberries, torn basil, and sugar in your glass or cocktail shaker. Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, gently press and twist to release juices and oils without pulverizing.
  3. Pour in freshly squeezed lime juice and white rum if using. Stir gently to combine flavors.
  4. Fill the glass with ice cubes almost to the top.
  5. Pour sparkling water over the ice, filling the glass. Use a spoon or stirrer to mix gently but thoroughly.
  6. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and a slice of lime or strawberry on the rim. Serve immediately.

Notes

Do not over-muddle basil to avoid bitterness. Use freshly squeezed lime juice for best flavor. Adjust sweetness to taste. For a non-alcoholic version, omit rum and add extra sparkling water or lemon-lime soda. Chill glasses before serving for a crisper drink. You can prepare the strawberry-basil-sugar mix up to 24 hours ahead and store in the fridge.
