These cheesy, meaty appetizers are perfect for parties, game days, or casual gatherings. Quick, easy, and always a crowd-pleaser!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground sausage (spicy breakfast sausage or Italian sausage)
  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey/chicken)
  • 16 oz Velveeta cheese, cubed (or shredded cheddar/Monterey Jack)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Cocktail rye bread slices (or baguette slices/mini pita rounds)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground sausage and ground beef, breaking them up with a wooden spoon. Stir occasionally until fully browned and no pink remains, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle in garlic powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to combine and cook for another 2 minutes.
  4. Lower the heat to medium and add cubed Velveeta cheese to the skillet. Stir continuously until the cheese melts and coats the meat mixture evenly, about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Lay cocktail rye slices on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer.
  6. Spoon 1-2 tablespoons of the meat and cheese mixture onto each slice of rye bread.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges of the bread are crispy and the topping is bubbly.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!

Notes

For a spicy kick, add cayenne pepper or diced jalapeños to the meat mixture. You can prepare the meat mixture a day ahead and reheat before assembling. Use parchment paper for easy cleanup.
